Collaborative Research Center SFB/TR 8

The Collaborative Research Center/Transregio's „SFB/TR 8 Spatial Cognition – Reasoning, Action, Interaction“ project is an interdisciplinary research program of the Universities of Freiburg and Bremen which works closely with partner institutions around the world. Computer scientists, psychologists and linguists have been working on this program since the early 2003, investigating how people and robots acquire and process knowledge about their spatial environment, how they find their way around and how they are able to exchange information about their environment.

In November 2006, after examining the outstanding achievements of the research program to date, the German Research Foundation (DFG) decided to continue funding the SFB/TR 8 for the period up to 2010. Having worked out the theoretical foundations of spatial cognition and developed prototypes, research will now focus on interactive assistance systems, robot navigation and architecture applications.

During the first funding phase (2003-2006), the DFG supported a total of 13 SFB/TR 8 projects, producing around 6.6 million euros. In its second phase, the program has been extended to include 15 projects, which have received a total of 9.5 million euros in funding.
