Career Prospects

The Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (Computer Science Association) believes that in the future, next to reading, writing and arithmetic, the mastery of computer methods and tools will become a fourth basic skill. The variety of jobs available in the field and the excellent career opportunities for computer scientists confirm this view. What’s more, according to c't magazine, computer scientists can earn above average salaries and generally experience high job satisfaction.

Well-trained computer scientists have excellent career prospects in many different areas: research and development in a wide range of applications, lecturing work, software development and programming, project management, database management, system and network administration, data protection, IT consulting, management consulting, sales, user support, marketing, market research, controlling and information research – and the list doesn’t end there.

Working in IT and in any other area where IT methods and solutions are required is suitable for people who are good at teamwork. The variety of the work means that computer scientists have to cooperate with a variety of different people as they jointly analyze problems and search for solution strategies. In addition to experience, imagination and intuition, communication skills are of vital importance, as is the desire for lifelong learning: computer scientists constantly have to keep up with new technologies, methods and tools. This is part of their job and – according to the Gesellschaft für Informatik – one of the strategic responsibilities of each and every company in the industry.
