Thanks to its location on the new campus of the Faculty of Engineering, the Department of Computer Science has an excellent infrastructure. The short distances between buildings, long opening hours, state-of-the-art technical equipment and extensive e-learning opportunities provide flexible working conditions.
In addition to the central facilities of the faculty administration (Dean’s office, examination office, internship office, technology transfer, graduate office), the faculty library and the airfield canteen, students and researchers have access to a wide range of seminar and tutorial rooms fitted out to a high standard, as well as to two large multimedia lecture halls.
The university network can be accessed from any point on the faculty's campus. There are over 60 workstations available in our computer rooms, using the operating systems Sun Debian [GNU/Linux] and Windows Vista. 42 WLAN access points are located all around the faculty campus.
Other Freiburg University facilities, including the computer center, the Mathematical Institute and the university library, can be easily reached by bicycle or public transport. The suburban line runs half-hourly services from the station “Neue Messe / Universität” to the main train station, a journey which only takes 4 minutes.
Freiburg offers ideal conditions for computer science related start-up projects. Within the immediate vicinity of the campus lie the Fraunhofer Institutes for Solar Energy Systems, Physical Measurement Techniques, High-Speed Dynamics and Applied Solid-State Physics, the Max-Planck Institute for Immunobiology, and the Solar-Info-Center, as well as BioTechPark Freiburg.
Of course, the campus not only offers a lot of scope for research and study, but also for leisure activities. In summer, the extensive lawns between the faculty buildings are popular for long lunch breaks, playing Frisbee, and so on. We also have a soccer field and a basketball court.
