The Computer-based New Media group works on
  1. Data Mining / Machine Learning, especially on Data Mining of web data (Web Mining), e.g., of usage data (Web Usage Mining), structures (Web Structure Mining) and contents / texts (Web Content Mining / Text Mining). Methodologically, we develop algorithms for association analysis (association rule algorithms) as well as models and algorithms for predictive modelling / classification.
  2. Internet Technologies, especially XML and XML-databases, web services, technologies for the semantic web, Java and several Java-based server technologies (JSP, integration with XML, etc.). At the interface with methodological topics from (1) we are interested in numerically intensive Java.
  3. E-commerce- and e-business applications, especially complex, dynamic, adaptive and/or learning systems, that require "intelligence", that can be realized by methods from (1). Examples are recommender systems (e.g., for sales assistance) as well as intelligent methods for marketing research (mainly non-reactive methods as web usage mining, but also reactive adaptive methods as adaptive conjoint analysis). For the storage and management of the underlying data we are interested in data warehouse technologies (e.g., for web usage data).
  4. E-learning, especially the analysis of the usage of e-learning products and services as well as the automatic structuring of information and the assistance of learners in e-learning environments, e.g. by means of recommender systems (see 3).
We are co-organizing the GfKl 2007 conference on Data Analysis, Machine Learning, and Applications March 7-9, 2007, Freiburg, Germany.
